Dream of the beach. Look each way for the dim glow of light.

It is while pondering the ‘dim glow of light’ that I am called in for treatment. As luck would have it, Jonny can’t stay with me today. He just has time to install me in one of the black lazy boy chairs. We share a light moment before he leaves.

There is a private joke in my family referred to as ‘the Jew in the restaurant syndrome’ which describes how Jews are likely to walk into any restaurant and move tables at least four times before they settle down for the meal. There can be any number of reasons for this: the first table could be too near to the entrance, exposing us to a small and uncomfortable draft; the second table could be too near the kitchen making the clank of dishes intrusive; the third is too close to the air conditioner vent; the forth table is claustrophobic with the arm of the person at the next table poking into you.

I suffer from this syndrome in restaurants and in hotels too. If the room is too near the lift, or the window is facing a brick wall or the position of the bed is wrong, I am quick to ask for a new room. My family simply wait with the luggage in the lobby while I find my place of peace. Today Jonny discovers that my syndrome extends to the oncology treatment ward. I describe it to my friends later as such:
